 Unfailing Love

"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works! "
(Psalm 107:2)

After visiting his wife at a residence for Alzheimer's patients, retired pastor Browning Ware described the scene as he and close friends prepared to leave: "We shared hugs all around and held hands in prayer. So much to be grateful for! I thanked God for family, for friends, and for His radical love that liberates us even when caught within life's clawing circumstances."

As we pause to thank God for every way He has blessed us, it's good to remember that our greatest treasure is His unfailing love. Too often our thankfulness ebbs and flows with our health or financial security. We equate God's blessing with freedom from pain and sorrow. But through faith and experience we learn that God's great love for us expressed in Jesus Christ can calm our hearts and minds even in the most taxing situations.

Four times in Psalm 107 we read, "Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!" (vv.8,15,21,31). Even when life seems overwhelming, we can cry out to the Lord and find His deliverance from our distress (vv.6,13,19,28).

It is not health or wealth, but God's unfailing love that sets us free in every circumstance of life.

 신실한 사랑

“여호와의 인자하심과 인생에게 행하신 기이한 일을 인하여 그를 찬송할지로다”
(시편 107:21)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
은퇴한 부라우닝 웨어 목사님은 치매 환자 요양원에 있는 아내를 찾아 본 후 그와 그의 가까운 친구들이 그곳을 떠날 준비를 할 때의 장면을 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “우리는 돌아가면서 포옹을 하고 손에 손을 잡고 기도를 했습니다. 감사할 일이 얼마나 많았는지요! 나는 나의 가족과 친구들에 대해서 하나님께 감사하였고 삶의 속박에 붙들린 상황 속에서도 우리를 자유케 해 주시는 하나님의 강한 사랑에 대해서 감사하였습니다.”

우리에게 주신 모든 축복에 대해 우리가 시간을 내어 하나님께 감사할 때에 우리에게 가장 귀한 보물은 그의 신실하신 사랑이라는 것을 상기해 보는 것이 좋습니다. 우리의 감사하는 마음은 우리의 건강이나 경제적 안정이 어떠한가에 따라 바뀔 때가 너무나 많습니다. 우리는 하나님의 축복을 고통이나 슬픔에서 해방되는 것과 같은 것으로 생각합니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도 안에서 나타나는 우리를 향한 하나님의 크신 사랑은 아무리 힘든 상황에서도 우리의 마음과 생각을 평온케 할 수 있다는 것을 우리는 믿음과 경험을 통해 배워갑니다.

우리는 시편 107편에서 “여호와의 인자하심과 인생에게 행하신 기이한 일을 인하여 그를 찬송할지로다”(8, 15, 21, 31절) 하신 말씀이 네번이나 반복되는 것을 봅니다. 우리는 우리의 삶이 감당하기 어렵게 보일 때에도 여호와께 부르짖을 수 있고 우리의 고통 가운데에서 그의 구원하심을 얻을 수 있습니다 (6, 13, 19, 28절).

건강이나 부유함이 아니라 오직 하나님의 변함없는 사랑만이 우리를 모든 삶의 여건 속에서 자유롭게 하십니다.
