 What We Really Need

"Happy is the man who finds wisdom. . . . She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her."
(Proverbs 3:13,18)

In a biting comment, one philosopher said of another that he was "the greatest of thinkers and the most petty of men." We admire individuals of high intelligence, but we certainly wouldn't want that statement to be said about us.

Better by far to be an ordinary person who by God's grace reflects Christ's character.
Better not to be a mental giant who is spiritually petty.

Intelligence and knowledge are God's gifts, and we can admire them. But we must remember that a good heart and godly character are more to be desired than brainpower, and that love is the most praiseworthy of gifts
(1 Corinthians 13:13).

Even though we may respect friends who are blessed with keen minds, we know that wisdom from the Lord is what we really need. In Proverbs 2-3, we are told to search for wisdom as for hidden treasures, and to realize that it is more valuable than silver, gold, or rubies (2:4; 3:14-15). Wisdom is called "a tree of life," which is a symbolic way of describing the blessings of being in a right relationship with God (3:18). A wise person can walk through life with confidence, assured of the Lord's approval (v.26).

Wisdom, that's what we really need.

 우리에게 꼭 필요한 것

"지혜를 얻은 자는 복이 있나니… 지혜는 그 얻은 자에게 생명 나무라"
(잠언 3:13,18)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
한 철학자가 어떤 다른 철학자를 “가장 뛰어난 사상가이지만 동시에 가장 저급한 사람” 이라고 신랄하게 말한 적이 있습니다. 우리는 높은 지성을 갖춘 사람을 동경하지만, 우리 자신에 대해 그와같은 말을 듣는 것은 원치 않습니다.

하나님의 은혜 가운데 예수님의 성품을 보여주는 보통 사람이 되는 것이 영적으로 저급한 거물 사상가가 되는 것 보다 훨씬 낫습니다.

지성과 지식은 하나님이 주시는 선물이기에 우리는 그것들을 사모할 수 있습니다. 하지만 지적능력보다는 선한 마음과 하나님의 성품을 더 사모하여야 하고, 사랑이 하나님의 선물 중에 제일
(고전 13:13) 임을 우리는 기억해야만 합니다.

예리한 지성으로 축복 받은 사람들을 존경하기는 하지만, 우리에게 진정 필요한 것은 하나님께로부터 오는 지혜라는 것을 우리는 압니다.
잠언 2-3장에서는 감추인 보배를 찾는 것 같이 지혜를 구하고, 그것이 은, 정금 또는 진주보다 더 귀하다는 것을 깨달을 것을 말씀하고 있습니다(2:4; 3:14-15). “생명 나무” 라고 불리는 이 지혜는 하나님과의 바른 관계 속에서 오는 축복을 상징적으로 표현하고 있습니다 (3:18).
지혜로운 사람은 인생 길을 걸어갈 때 주님께서 그 길을 인정하심을 확신하며 걸어갈 수 있습니다 (26절).

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
지혜, 우리에게 정말 필요한 바로 그것입니다.
주님의 축복은
그를 순종하는 사람을 통하여 알 수 있고
주님의 지혜, 진리, 그리고 사랑은
그의 길을 따르는 사람에게 나타납니다.
