  It's Too Easy

"To him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness."
(Romans 4:5)

I read about an instant cake mix that was a big flop. The instructions said all you had to do was add water and bake.
The company couldn't understand why it didn't sell, until their research discovered that the buying public felt uneasy about a mix that required only water.
People thought it was too easy.
So the company altered the formula and changed the recipe to call for adding water and an egg to the mix. The idea worked, and sales jumped dramatically.

That story reminds me of how some people react to the plan of salvation. To them it sounds too easy and simple to be true, even though the Bible says, "By grace you have been saved through faith, . . . it is the gift of God, not of works"
(Ephesians 2:8-9).
They feel that there is something more they must do, something they must add to God's "recipe" for salvation. They think they must perform good works to gain God's favor and earn eternal life.
But the Bible is clear- we are saved "not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy" (Titus 3:5).

Unlike the cake-mix manufacturer, God has not changed His "formula" to make salvation more marketable. The gospel we proclaim must be free of works, even though it may sound too easy.

너무 쉬운 일

"일을 아니할지라도 경건치 아니한 자를 의롭다 하시는 이를 믿는 자에게는 그의 믿음을 의로 여기시나니" (로마서 4:5)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

큰 실패로 끝난 즉석 케이크가루 제품에 대한 기사를 읽은 적이 있습니다. 설명서에 따르면 단지 물을 붓고 굽기만 하면 되는 것이었습니다. 제조회사는 소비자들이 물만 부으면 되는 제품을 석연치 않게 여긴다는 조사 결과를 보기 전에는 왜 판매가 부진했는지 이해하지 못했습니다. 사람들이 너무 쉽다고 느꼈던 것입니다. 그래서 회사는 조리법을 조금 바꾸었고 설명서도 제품에 물뿐만 아니라 계란도 넣도록 변경하였습니다. 이 생각은 적중했고 판매는 급성장하였습니다.

이 이야기는 구원의 계획에 대해 사람들의 반응을 생각나게 합니다. "너희가 그 은혜를 인하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 얻었나니… 하나님의 선물이라 행위에서 난 것이 아니니"(엡 2:8-9)라고 성경이 분명히 말하고 있음에도 불구하고, 그들에게는 구원의 계획이 너무 쉽고 단순해서 사실로 받아들이지 못합니다.
그들은 무언가를 좀더 해야만 하고, 구원을 위한 하나님의 "조리법"에 무언가를 더 가미해야 한다고 느낍니다.
그들은 선한 일을 해야 하나님의 마음에 들고 영생을 얻는다고 생각합니다. 그러나 성경은 분명하게 우리가 "우리의 행한 바 의로운 행위로 말미암지 아니하고 오직 그의 긍휼하심을 좇아"(딛 3:5) 구원받는다고 증거합니다.

케이크가루 제조회사와는 달리 하나님은 그의 구원이 좀더 쉽게 받아들여지도록 그의 "공식"을 바꾸지 않으십니다.
너무 쉽다고 생각될지 모르지만 우리가 선포하는 복음은 행위로 이루어지는 것이 결코아닙니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
구원은 하나님의 선물이기에
노력이나 승리로 얻을 수 없습니다.
하나님의 아들을 믿는 모두에게
하나님은 영생을 거저 주십니다.
