 A Stone Or Bread?

"What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? " (Matthew 7:9)

No loving father would give a stone or a snake to his hungry son if he asked for a piece of bread or a fish. Jesus used the absurdity of that analogy in Matthew 7 to underscore the heavenly Father's readiness to give good things to His children when they ask Him. He wanted them to have complete confidence in the Father's provision for their spiritual needs.

Sometimes, however, it may seem as if the Lord has given us "stones" instead of "bread."
But in His wisdom, He actually is working through our circumstances to give us something far better than what we requested. An unknown author expressed it this way:

I asked for health that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked God for strength that I might achieve;
I was made weak that I might learn to obey.
I asked for riches that I might be happy;
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for power and the praise of men;
I was given weakness to sense my need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing I asked for but everything I hoped for;
In spite of myself, my prayers were answered.
I am among all men most richly blessed.
Yes, God always gives us what's best for us.

 돌인가 떡인가?

"너희 중에 누가 아들이 떡을 달라 하면 돌을 주며" (마태복음 7:9)

● 말씀을 묵상하며 ●
배고픈 아들이 떡이나 생선을 달라고 할 때 돌이나 뱀을 주는 아버지는 없을 것입니다. 예수님께서는 하나님 아버지께서 자녀들이 달라고 할 때 좋을 것을 주시려고 준비하고 계신다는 것을 강조하기 위해 마태복음 7장에서 터무니없는 비유를 사용하셨습니다. 예수님은 그들이 하나님 아버지께서 영적인 필요를 공급해 주신다는 것에 대해 완벽한 확신을 갖기를 원하셨습니다.

그러나, 가끔은 주님께서 “떡”대신 “돌”을 주시는 것 같아 보이는 때가 있습니다. 하지만 사실은 하나님께서 그 분의 지혜 가운데 우리가 요구한 것보다 더 좋은 것을 주시려고 우리의 환경을 통해 역사하고 계신 것입니다. 이런 상황을 어느 무명의 작가는 이렇게 표현했습니다.

위대한 일을 하기 위해 건강을 간구했으나 더 좋은 일을 할 수 있도록 질병을 주셨습니다.

성취할 수 있는 힘을 간구했으나
순종을 배우도록 허약하게 하셨습니다.
행복해지려고 부자가 되기를 간구했으나
지혜롭게 되라고 가난하게 하셨습니다.
권력과 사람들의 칭찬을 구했으나
하나님이 필요함을 깨닫도록 미약하게 하셨습니다.
인생을 즐기려고 모든 것을 간구했으나
모든 것을 누릴 수 있는 생명을 얻었습니다.
간구한 것 아무 것도 받지 못했으나
소망하던 모든 것을 얻었습니다.
내 뜻과는 달랐으나 나의 기도는 응답 받았습니다.
나는 가장 큰 축복을 받은 사람입니다.
그렇습니다. 하나님께서는 항상 우리에게 최상의 것을 주십니다.
