 Ain't It Awful!

" Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the Lord."
(Lamentations 3:40)

A friend told me about a man who shouted the same three words each day from his street-corner newsstand. "Ain't it awful!" he would say to passersby while extending a newspaper. People bought a paper because they just had to know what terrible thing had occurred.

Tragedy and dire predictions always make the front page, but if we become preoccupied with bad news, we will succumb to what my friend calls "awfulizing"-a pervasive pessimism that clouds every situation with gloom.

If anyone had a good reason for being despondent, it was the prophet Jeremiah.
For 40 years, he declared God's judgment on the rebellious and unrepentant nation of Judah. Jeremiah suffered because of their disobedience, but he clung to his faith in God's goodness. Even after witnessing the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity of his people, Jeremiah wrote: "The Lord will not cast off forever. Though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the Lord" (Lamentations 3:31-32,40).

Disobedience to God can cause great pain, but the doorway out of discouragement leads to the Lord, who "is good to those who wait for Him" (v.25).

"우리가 스스로 행위를 조사하고 여호와께로 돌아가자"
(예레미야애가 3:40)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
한 친구가 길모퉁이에 있는 신문 판매대에서 매일 똑같은 세 마디의 말을 외쳐대던 사람에 대해서 말해주었습니다.
그는 지나가는 사람들에게 신문을 내밀면서 "정말 끔찍하지 않습니까?"라고 말하곤 했습니다. 사람들은 무슨 끔찍한 일이 일어났는지 알아야 했기에 신문들을 샀습니다.

비극과 무시무시한 예언들은 항상 신문의 1면을 장식합니다. 그러나 만약 우리가 나쁜 소식들에만 마음을 빼앗긴다면 우리는, 내 친구가 "끔찍화 현상"이라고 부른, 모든 상황을 침울함으로 물들게 하는 보편적 염세주의에 굴복하게 됩니다.

만약 낙담할만한 충분한 이유가 있는 사람이 있었다면 그는 예레미야 선지자입니다. 40년 동안 그는 반항적이고 회개하지 않는 유다 나라에 대한 하나님의 심판을 선언하였습니다. 예레미야는 그들의 불순종 때문에 고통을 받았지만 그는 하나님의 선하심에 대한 그의 신앙에 매달렸습니다. 예루살렘의 멸망과 그의 민족이 포로가 되는 것을 목격한 후에도 예레미야는 "이는 주께서 영원토록 버리지 않으실 것임이며 저가 비록 근심케 하시나 그 풍부한 자비대로 긍휼히 여기실 것임이라. 우리가 스스로 행위를 조사하고 여호와께로 돌아가자"
(애 3:31-32,40)라고 했습니다.

하나님께 대한 불순종은 커다란 고통을 자아낼 수 있습니다.그러나 실망에서 빠져 나오는 길만이 "무릇 기다리는 자에게 선을 베푸시는" (25절) 주님께로 인도합니다.

낙담한 자여 외면하지 마십시오.
재능을 일깨우고 주를향한 목표를 추구하십시오.
하나님의 때에 주가 이루심을 보게됩니다
주님께서 희망을 주시고
당신의 영혼을 들어올리십니다.
