Cut-Flower Christians

"Without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

I enjoy buying or receiving a fresh bouquet of cut flowers. After admiring and smelling them, I waste no time getting them into water. Even though fresh and beautiful when I get them, their days are numbered. Because they've been severed from their life-source, they will soon wither and die. I know that one day I will have to throw them away.

Author Lloyd Ogilvie sees in this a picture of the Christian whose spiritual vitality has faded and shriveled. Such a person has become a "cut-flower Christian." Jesus used a similar illustration about a vine and its branches to describe our relationship to Him. Just as a branch can't bear fruit by itself, He explained, we can't bear spiritual fruit unless we abide in Him, the true vine (John 15:4).

If a branch could speak, it wouldn't apologize for its need to depend on the vine for bearing fruit. It would say instead, "For this I was made!" Jesus knew we were made for dependence on Him, our life-source—no apology needed! In fact, such dependence is the only way to avoid becoming a "cut-flower Christian."

Let's embrace His declaration, "Without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). As we depend on Him, we will bear much fruit—and for this we were made.

잘라진 꽃과 같은 신자

“나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라” (요한복음 15:5)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나는 싱싱한 꽃다발을 사거나 받는 것을 좋아합니다. 꽃을 보며 감탄하고 향기를 맡고나서는 곧 물에 담구어 놓습니다. 처음 받을 때에는 신선하고 아름답지만 며칠을 가지 않습니다. 생명의 근원으로부터 단절되어 있기 때문에 곧 시들어 죽게 됩니다. 그래서 언젠가 버려야 한다는 것을 나는 압니다.작가 로이드 오글비는 영적인 힘이 점점 줄어들어 결국은 시들어버리고 마는 그리스도인들의 모습을 여기에 비유합니다. 그런 사람은 “잘라진 꽃과 같은 신자”가 된 것입니다. 예수님도 그와 우리와의 관계를 말씀하시기 위해 이와 비슷한 포도나무와 가지의 예화를 사용하셨습니다. 가지가 스스로 열매를 맺을 수 없듯이 우리도 참포도나무인 주님 안에 거하지 않으면 영적인 열매를 맺을 수 없다고 예수님이 설명하셨습니다(요 15:4).
만약 가지가 말을 할 수 있다면 자기가 열매 맺기 위해 포도나무에 붙어 있는 것을 미안해 하지 않을 것입니다. 오히려 그 가지는 “나는 바로 이것 때문에 만들어졌다!”고 말해야 할 것입니다. 우리가 생명의 근원이신 예수님을 의지하여 살도록 만들어졌다는 것을 아시는 예수님에게 우리가 미안해 할 필요가 없습니다! 사실 주님을 의지하는 것만이 “잘라진 꽃과 같은 신자”가 되지 않는 유일한 길입니다.
“나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없음이라”(요 15:5)고 하신 주님의 말씀을 받아들이십시오. 주님을 의지할 때 우리는 더 많은 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다. 우리는 바로 이를 위해 창조되었습니다.

부족함 없는 포도나무인
사랑의 주님을 내가 더 가까이 의지하네.
주님만이 나에게 열매 맺게 하시며
복된 하늘의 능력을 주시네.
