 Pass It On

"When I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation." (Psalm 71:18)

Getting older doesn't mean becoming obsolete. It can mean growing, maturing, serving, ministering, venturing, enjoying ourselves to the end of our days. "Old men ought to be explorers," author T. S. Eliot said. One of my friends says, "Have a blast while you last."

To idle away our last years is to rob ourselves of what could be the best years of our lives and to deprive the church of gifts God has given to enrich it. There is still service to be rendered and there are victories to be won.

Some older folks may not have the energy or inclination for leadership, but they are an invaluable asset to the next generation of leaders.
John Wesley was asked what he would do if he knew he had only a short time to live. He responded, "I should meet with my young men till the moment came that I was called to yield my spirit back to Him that gave it."

The psalmist also desired to pass along his understanding of the Lord to others, and he prayed, "When I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation" (Psalm 71:18).

We too should remain open to being used by God to enrich others' lives. Our greatest usefulness may be to pass our understanding of God on to others.

계속 전하라

"하나님이여 내가 늙어 백수가 될 때에도 나를 버리지 마시며 내가 주의 힘을 후대에... 전하기까지 나를 버리지 마소서"
(시편 71:18)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
나이들어간다는 것이 쓸모없게 된다는 것을 뜻하지는 않는다. 그것은 성장하고, 성숙하고, 봉사하고, 섬기고, 도전하며, 우리 인생의 마지막까지 우리 자신을 즐기는 것을 의미한다.
작가 티 에스 엘리옷은 "나이 든 사람은 탐험가가 되어야 한다."라고 말한 바 있다. 어떤 친구는 또 "사는 날까지 팔팔하게 살아 "라고 말한다.

우리의 말년을 빈둥거리며 보내는 것은 우리 인생의 최고가 될 수 있는 기간을 우리 자신으로부터 훔치는 것이며, 교회를 풍성하게 하라고 하나님께서 주신 선물을 교회로부터 빼앗는 것과 같다.
봉사할 일들이 아직 있으며 쟁취해야 할 승리가 아직 남아 있다.

통솔력을 발휘할 힘이 없거나 그것이 성격에 맞지 않는 노인들일지라도 다음 세대의 지도자들에게는 매우 귀중한 자산이다.
요한 웨슬리는 자신이 살 날이 얼마남지 않았다는 사실을 알게 된다면 무엇을 하겠는가 하는 질문을 받았다.
그는 "나는 내 영혼을 주신 분께로 다시 그것을 돌려드리도록 부름 받는 그 순간까지 젊은이들을 만날 것입니다"라고 대답하였다.

이 시편 기자 또한 주님에 대하여 자신이 알고 있는 것을 다른 사람들에게 널리 알리려는 열망을 가지고 있었기에 "하나님이여 내가 늙어 백수가 될 때에도 나를 버리지 마시며 내가 주의 힘을 후대에… 전하기까지 나를 버리지 마소서"라고 기도하였다 (시 71:18).

우리 또한 하나님께서 다른 이들의 삶을 풍성하게 하시는데 쓰임 받는 사람이 되도록 준비하고 있어야 한다.
우리가 가장 잘 쓰임 받는 것는 하나님에 대해 우리가 아는 것을 다른 사람들에게전하는 일일 것이다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
오래 살수록, 우리는 더 많은 것을 알게 된다.
노년은 지혜를 보여 줄 수 있는 시간이다
우리가 하는 말들이
훗날 미래의 지도자들에게
얼마나 큰 도움이 될지 아무도 모른다.
