"To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also." (Luke 6:29)

Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy tells a story of an old cobbler named Martin. After the death of his wife and child, he cried out in despair to a godly old friend, "What now is a man to live for?" His friend replied, "For God, Martin. For God." "And how must one live for God?" Martin asked. "Christ has shown us the way," said the believer. "Buy the Gospels and read. There you'll find out how to live for God. There everything is explained," he said.

So that same day Martin bought a New Testament and began to read. The more he read, the more clearly he understood what God wanted of him and what it meant to live for God. And his heart grew lighter and lighter.

Then one day Martin read Luke 6:27-35, and it suddenly hit him that Jesus' words were hard sayings. He pondered the command in verse 29, "To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also." As he began to see how his life didn't measure up to Jesus' words, he cried out, "O Lord, help me!"

We also may feel that obedience to Jesus' words is too difficult for us. His hard sayings seem impossible to obey. Like Martin, we must cry out, "O Lord, help me!" Without Him we can do nothing.

 지키기 어려운 말씀

“네 이 뺨을 치는 자에게 저 뺨도 돌려 대며” (누가복음 6:29)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
러시아의 소설가인 레오 톨스토이가 늙은 구두 수선공 마틴의 이야기를 합니다. 마틴은 아내와 자식이 죽은 후 한 경건한 오랜 친구에게 “앞으로 무엇을 위해 살아가야 하나?”라고 절망에 빠져 울부짖었습니다. 그의 친구는 “하나님을 위해 살게” 라고 대답했습니다. 마틴이 물었습니다. “어떻게 사는 것이 하나님을 위해 사는건가?” 그 신자가 말했습니다. “그리스도께서 그 길을 보여 주셨으니 복음서를 사서 읽어보면 자네는 어떻게 사는 것이 하나님을 위해 사는 것인지 알게 될 걸세. 모든 설명이 거기에 있네.”

바로 그날 마틴은 신약성경을 사서 읽기 시작했습니다. 성경을 읽으면 읽을수록 그는 하나님이 그에게 원하시는 것이 무엇인지, 그리고 하나님을 위해 사는 것이 무엇을 뜻하는지 확실히 이해하게 되었습니다. 그리고 그의 가슴은 점점 가벼워지기 시작했습니다.

그러던 어느 날 누가복음 6:27-35을 읽고 나서 마틴은 예수님의 말씀은 정말로 따르기 힘들다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 그는 “네 이 뺨을 치는 자에게 저 뺨도 돌려 대며”하신 29절의 말씀을 깊이 생각했습니다.
그리고 그의 삶이 얼마나 예수님의 말씀에 맞지 않는지를 깨닫기 시작하며 “오 주여, 저를 도와주소서!”라고 부르짖었습니다.

우리도 역시 예수님의 말씀을 따르는 것이 너무 어렵다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 지키기 어려운 주님의 말씀에 복종하는 것이 불가능하게 보입니다. 마틴처럼 우리도 “오 주여, 저를 도와주소서!”라고 울부짖어야 합니다. 그분 없이는 우리는 아무 것도 할 수 없습니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
그리스도께 순종하는 것이 아주 어렵게 보일 수도 있지만
주님께서 바라시는 것은 풍성하고
자유로운 삶을 만드는 것
곧 우리를 위한 것임을 꼭 알아야 합니다.
