" The Lord is good to those who wait for Him. "

When American country singer George Jones died at the age of 81, his fans remembered his remarkable voice and his hard life and personal struggles.
While many of his songs reflected his own despair and longing, it was the way he sang them that touched people deeply.
Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot said, “His voice was made for conveying heartbreak.”

The book of Lamentations records Jeremiah’s anguish over the nation of Judah’s stubborn refusal to follow God. Often called “the weeping prophet,” he witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem and saw his people carried into captivity. He wandered the streets of the city, overwhelmed by grief (Lam.1:1-5).

Yet, in Jeremiah’s darkest hour, he said, “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness”(3:21-23).

Whether we suffer for our own choices or from those of others, despair may threaten to overwhelm us. When all seems lost, we can cling to the Lord’s faithfulness. “‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul. ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’”(v.24).

I’m thankful for Your faithfulness, Father, even in the times
when I am unfaithful.
Help me to remember,
like Jeremiah, that my hope comes from You,
not from my circumstances.

# Lamentations 3:1-6, 16-25

[1] I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.
[2] He has led me and made me walk In darkness and not in light.
[3] Surely He has turned His hand against me Time and time again throughout the day.
[4] He has aged my flesh and my skin, And broken my bones.
[5] He has besieged me And surrounded me with bitterness and woe.
[6] He has set me in dark places Like the dead of long ago.

[16] He has also broken my teeth with gravel, And covered me with ashes.
[17] You have moved my soul far from peace; I have forgotten prosperity.
[18] And I said, "My strength and my hope Have perished from the LORD."
[19] Remember my affliction and roaming, The wormwood and the gall.
[20] My soul still remembers And sinks within me.
[21] This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope.
[22] Through the LORD'S mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.
[23] They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
[24] "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I hope in Him!"
[25] The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.

미국의 컨트리 가수 조지 존스가 81세로 죽었을 때, 그의 팬들은 그의 뛰어난 목소리와 그의 힘들었던 삶, 그리고 그의 개인적인 고통들을 회상했습니다.
그의 많은 노래들이 그 자신의 절망과 간절함을 나타내었어도, 사람들을 깊이 감동시킨 것은 노래를 불렀던 그의 방식이었습니다.
<시카고 트리뷴>지의 음악평론가인 그레그 캇은 “그의 목소리는 비통한 마음을 전달하는데 아주 타고났다 ”라고 했습니다.

예레미야애가는 하나님께 순종하기를 고집스럽게 거부하는 유다 백성들 때문에 괴로워하는 예레미야의 모습을 기록하고 있습니다. 종종 “눈물의 선지자”라고 불리는 그는 예루살렘의 몰락을 목격하고 그의 백성들이 포로로 끌려가는 것을 보았습니다. 그는 슬픔에 빠져 예루살렘 거리를 헤매었습니다(애 1:1-5).

그러나 예레미야는 깊은 절망 속에도 “내 마음에 담아 두었더니 그것이 오히려 나의 소망이 되었사옴은 여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다”(3:21-23)라고 했습니다.

우리가 우리 자신이나 다른 사람 때문에 고통을 받게 될 때, 절망이 우리를 넘어뜨리려고 위협할 수도 있습니다.
그러나 우리는 모든 것을 잃어버린 것처럼 느낄 때에도 하나님의 신실하심을 의지할 수 있습니다.
“내 심령에 이르기를 여호와는 나의 기업이시니 그러므로 내가 그를 바라리라”(24절).


하나님 아버지, 제가 신실하지 못할 때조차도
하나님은 신실하시니 감사합니다.
예레미야처럼 제 소망이 제 주변상황이 아닌
하나님으로부터 온다는 것을 기억하도록 도와주소서.

[1] 여호와의 분노의 매로 말미암아 고난 당한 자는 나로다
[2] 나를 이끌어 어둠 안에서 걸어가게 하시고 빛 안에서 걸어가지 못하게 하셨으며
[3] 종일토록 손을 들어 자주자주 나를 치시는도다
[4] 나의 살과 가죽을 쇠하게 하시며 나의 뼈들을 꺾으셨고
[5] 고통과 수고를 쌓아 나를 에우셨으며
[6] 나를 어둠 속에 살게 하시기를 죽은 지 오랜 자 같게 하셨도다

[16] 조약돌로 내 이들을 꺾으시고 재로 나를 덮으셨도다
[17] 주께서 내 심령이 평강에서 멀리 떠나게 하시니 내가 복을 내어버렸음이여
[18] 스스로 이르기를 나의 힘과 여호와께 대한 내 소망이 끊어졌다 하였도다
[19] 내 고초와 재난 곧 쑥과 담즙을 기억하소서
[20] 내 마음이 그것을 기억하고 내가 낙심이 되오나
