 The Final Picture

" Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things."
( Isaiah 40:26 )

What started as an empty 11-acre field in Belfast, Northern Ireland, ended up as the largest land portrait in the British Isles. Wish, by artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, is made from 30,000 wooden pegs, 2,000 tons of soil, 2,000 tons of sand, and miscellaneous items such as grass, stones, and string.

At the beginning, only the artist knew what the final artwork was going to look like. He hired workers and recruited volunteers to haul materials and move them into place. As they worked, they saw little indication that something amazing was about to emerge. But it did. From the ground, it doesn’t look like much. But from above, viewers see a huge portrait—the smiling face of a little girl.

God is doing something on a grander scale in the world. He’s the artist who sees the final picture. We’re His “fellow workers”(1 Cor.3:9) who are helping to make it a reality. Through the prophet Isaiah, God reminded His people that it is He who “sits above the circle of the earth” and “stretches out the heavens like a curtain”(Isa.40:22).

We can’t see the final picture, but we continue on in faith, knowing that we’re part of an amazing work of art—one that is being created on earth but will be best seen from heaven.

Isaiah 40:21-31

[21] Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
[22] It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
[23] He brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth useless.
[24] Scarcely shall they be planted, Scarcely shall they be sown, Scarcely shall their stock take root in the earth, When He will also blow on them, And they will wither, And the whirlwind will take them away like stubble.
[25] "To whom then will you liken Me, Or to whom shall I be equal?" says the Holy One.
[26] Lift up your eyes on high, And see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might And the strength of His power; Not one is missing.
[27] Why do you say, O Jacob, And speak, O Israel: "My way is hidden from the LORD, And my just claim is passed over by my God"?
[28] Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
[29] He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.
[30] Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall,
[31] But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

북 아일랜드의 벨파스트에 있는 11에이커의 빈 땅은 영국에서 가장 큰 토지 초상화로 변했습니다.
“소원”이라는 이 초상화는 작가 조지 로드리게스 제라다에 의해 30,000개의 말뚝과 흙 2,000톤, 모래 2,000톤, 그리고 잔디, 돌, 끈 등으로 만들어졌습니다.

시작할 때에는 작가 혼자만이 작품이 어떤 모습을 갖게 될 것인지 알고 있었습니다. 그는 일꾼들을 고용하고 자원봉사자들을 모집하여 작품에 필요한 물건들을 나르고 필요한 자리에 갖다 놓았습니다. 그들은 일을 하면서도 장차 어떤 놀라운 것이 드러나리라고는 낌새도 차리지 못했습니다.
그러나 놀라운 것이 실제로 드러났습니다. 지상에서 보면 별것 아닌 것처럼 보이지만 공중에서 보면 어린 소녀의 웃는 얼굴을 표현한 거대 초상화를 드러내 보입니다.

하나님은 이 세상에서 더 웅대한 규모의 일을 하고 계십니다. 하나님은 마지막 그림을 보는 화가이십니다. 우리는 그 일이 이루어질 수 있도록 돕는 하나님의 “동역자들”(고전 3:9)입니다.
이사야 선지자를 통해 하나님은 “땅 위 궁창에 앉으시나니…하늘을 차일같이 펴신다”는 것을 그의 백성들에게 상기시켜 주었습니다 ( 사 40:22).
우리는 마지막 그림을 볼 수는 없지만 우리가 놀라운 작품의 일부라는 것을 알기에 믿음으로 계속 일 합니다. 그 작품은 지상에서 만들어지고 있지만 하늘에서 내려다 볼 때 가장 잘 보일 것입니다.


주님, 제가 큰 그림을 볼 수 있다고 가끔씩 생각하지만,
사실 극히 작은 것 밖에는 보지 못한다는 것을 알고 있습니다.
주님의 아름다운 뜻을 이 땅에 이루고 계심을 감사드립니다.
주님을 신뢰합니다.

이사야 40:21-31

[21] 너희가 알지 못하였느냐 너희가 듣지 못하였느냐 태초부터 너희에게 전하지 아니하였느냐 땅의 기초가 창조될 때부터 너희가 깨닫지 못하였느냐
[22] 그는 땅 위 궁창에 앉으시나니 땅에 사는 사람들은 메뚜기 같으니라 그가 하늘을 차일 같이 펴셨으며 거주할 천막 같이 치셨고
[23] 귀인들을 폐하시며 세상의 사사들을 헛되게 하시나니
[24] 그들은 겨우 심기고 겨우 뿌려졌으며 그 줄기가 겨우 땅에 뿌리를 박자 곧 하나님이 입김을 부시니 그들은 말라 회오리바람에 불려 가는 초개 같도다
[25] 거룩하신 이가 이르시되 그런즉 너희가 나를 누구에게 비교하여 나를 그와 동등하게 하겠느냐 하시니라
[26] 너희는 눈을 높이 들어 누가 이 모든 것을 창조하였나 보라 주께서는 수효대로 만상을 이끌어 내시고 그들의 모든 이름을 부르시나니 그의 권세가 크고 그의 능력이 강하므로 하나도 빠짐이 없느니라
[27] 야곱아 어찌하여 네가 말하며 이스라엘아 네가 이르기를 내 길은 여호와께 숨겨졌으며 내 송사는 내 하나님에게서 벗어난다 하느냐
[28] 너는 알지 못하였느냐 듣지 못하였느냐 영원하신 하나님 여호와, 땅 끝까지 창조하신 이는 피곤하지 않으시며 곤비하지 않으시며 명철이 한이 없으시며
[29] 피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시나니
[30] 소년이라도 피곤하며 곤비하며 장정이라도 넘어지며 쓰러지되
[31] 오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다
