"He who has seen Me has seen the Father. " (John 14:9)

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). Yet the apostle Paul spoke of God as One "whom no man has seen or can see" (1 Timothy 6:15-16). I have often thought about this seeming contradiction. How can we reconcile our Lord's statement with the words of Paul?I believe we must first recognize that God in His essential being is pure Spirit (John 4:24), and therefore is invisibly present everywhere in His vast creation (Psalm 139:7-12). But we read in the Bible that on various occasions God appeared to people in a visible way (Genesis 18:1-3). He created a burning bush from which to challenge Moses (Exodus 3:2). And in today's Scripture reading, the glory of His presence was revealed, and "there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone" (Exodus 24:9-10). God can appear in any form He desires, even while He Himself remains invisibly present throughout the universe.One day in heaven
the unseen, infinite God will graciously make Himself visible to us. But even then we'll be unable to look upon His full glory. Instead, we will see Jesus and live in His light (Revelation 21:23). But seeing Him will be seeing God, for He is God. What a blessed prospect!

 하나님을 본다는 것

“…나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘…” (요한복음 14:9)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
예수님은 “마음이 청결한 자는 복이 있나니 저희가 하나님을 볼 것임이요” (마 5:8)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 바울사도는 하나님에 대해 “아무 사람도 보지 못하였고 또 볼 수 없는 분” (딤전 6:15-16) 이라고 말했습니다. 나는 서로 모순처럼 들리는 이 말씀에 대해 종종 생각해 보았습니다. 주님이 하신 말씀과 바울의 말을 어떻게 연결시킬 수 있을까요? 하나님의 본체는 순수한 영이시며 (요 4:24), 따라서 그분은 자신의 광대한 창조 세계 어디에나 보이지 않게 임하신다는 것 (시 139:7-12)을 우리가 먼저 알아야 한다고 나는 믿습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 사람들 앞에 눈으로 볼 수 있는 방법으로 여러번 나타나신 것을 우리는 성경에서 읽습니다 (창 18:1-3). 그분은 불 붙는 떨기나무를 만드시고 거기서 모세에게 도전을 주셨습니다 (출 3:2). 그리고 오늘의 말씀에는 그분의 영광스러운 임재가 드러나 있습니다. “그 발 아래에는 청옥을 편 듯하고 하늘같이 청명하였다” (출 24:9-10)고 하였습니다. 하나님은 온 우주에 보이지 않게 존재하시면서도 또한 자신이 원하시
는 어떤 형태로도 나타나실 수 있습니다.보이지 않으며 무한하신 하나님은 언젠가 천국에서 자신을 우리에게 은혜로운 모습으로 보여주실 것입니다. 그러나 그 때에도 우리는 그분의 온전한 영광을 모두 볼 수는 없을 것입니다. 그보다 우리는 예수님을 보며 그분의 빛 안에 살게 될 것입니다 (계 21:23). 그 러나 예수님이 하나님이시기 때문에 예수님을 보는 것이 하나님을 보는 것이 될 것입니다. 이 얼마나 복된 모습입니까!

● 오늘의 묵상 ●
인간은 누구도 하나님을 보고는 살 수 없습니다. 그분의 광채는 모든 시력을 멸할 것입니다. 그러나 하나님이신 예수님이 진리요 빛되시므로 우리는 예수님의 영광을 보게될 것입니다.
