Matthew 4:18 - 4:22

Then [Jesus] said to them, “Follow Me.” ( Matthew 4:19 )

While visiting Jerusalem, a friend of mine saw an old rabbi walking past the Wailing Wall.
The interesting thing about the aged rabbi was the five young men walking behind him.
They too were walking bent over, limping—just like their rabbi.
An Orthodox Jew watching them would know exactly why they were imitating their teacher.
They were “followers.”

Throughout the history of Judaism, one of the most honored positions for a Jewish man was the privilege of becoming a “follower” of the local rabbi. Followers sat at the rabbi’s feet as he taught. They would study his words and watch how he acted and reacted to life and others.
A follower would count it the highest honor to serve his rabbi in even the most menial tasks.
And, because they admired their rabbi, they were determined to become like him.

When Jesus called His disciples to follow Him (Matt.4:19), it was an invitation to be changed by Him, to become like Him, and to share His passion for those who need a Savior. The high honor of being His follower should show in our lives as well. We too have been called to catch the attention of the watching world as we talk, think, and act just like Jesus—the rabbi, the teacher, of our souls.

Thank You, Lord, for the high honor of being
called to follow You.
May my life so imitate You
that others will know that You are the pursuit of my life and the rabbi of my soul.

Matthew 4:18-22

[18] And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
[19] Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."
[20] They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
[21] Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,
[22] and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●

예루살렘을 방문하는 동안 내 친구는 통곡의 벽을 지나가는 한 나이 든 랍비를 보았습니다. 이 나이 든 랍비 뒤를 젊은 남자 다섯 명이 뒤따르고 있는 것이 흥미로워 보였습니다.
그들은 모두 그들의 랍비처럼 허리를 굽히고 절뚝거리며 걷고 있었습니다. 정통 유태인이 그들을 보았다면 왜 그들이 그 선생님을 모방하고 있었는지 정확하게 알 것입니다.
그들은 그의 “제자들”이었습니다.

유대교의 역사를 통해 유대인 남자에게 가장 영광스러운 지위 중 하나는 그 고장에 랍비의 “제자”가 되는 특권이었습니다. 제자들은 랍비의 발밑에 앉아서 그의 가르침을 받았습니다.
그들은 랍비의 말을 배우며, 그가 다른 사람들에게나 삶에서 어떻게 행동하고 반응하는지를 관찰하곤 했습니다.
가장 미천한 일일지라도 그것이 랍비를 섬기는 일이라면 최고의 영예로 여겼습니다. 그들은 그들의 랍비를 존경했기 때문에 그와 같이 되기로 결심했던 것입니다.

● 오늘의 묵상 ●

예수님이 그의 제자들을 부르신 것은(마 4:19) 예수님으로 인해 그들이 변화되어 주님과 같이 되고, 구주가 필요한 사람들을 향한 주님의 열정을 그들에게 전달하라고 하는 초대였습니다.
주님의 제자로서 갖게 되는 최고의 영예가 우리의 삶 속에서도 나타나야 합니다. 우리도 우리 영혼의 랍비이며 스승이신 예수님처럼 말하고 생각하고 행동함으로써, 우리를 지켜보고 있는 세상 사람들의 주의를 끌도록 부르심을 받았습니다.


주님, 주님을 따르라는 부름을 받는 영광을 주셔서 감사합니다.
제 삶이 주님을 꼭 닮게 하셔서
주님이 제 영혼의 랍비이시며 제 삶이 추구하는 분임을
다른 사람들이 알 수 있게 해 주소서.

< 예수님을 따르라.
그리고 그분이 당신의 랍비임을 세상이 알게 하라. >

[18] 갈릴리 해변에 다니시다가 두 형제 곧 베드로라 하는 시몬과 그의 형제 안드레가 바다에 그물 던지는 것을 보시니 그들은 어부라
[19] 말씀하시되 나를 따라오라 내가 너희를 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라 하시니
[20] 그들이 곧 그물을 버려 두고 예수를 따르니라
[21] 거기서 더 가시다가 다른 두 형제 곧 세베대의 아들 야고보와 그의 형제 요한이 그의 아버지 세베대와 함께 배에서 그물 깁는 것을 보시고 부르시니
[22] 그들이 곧 배와 아버지를 버려 두고 예수를 따르니라
