 The Reason And The Risk

"I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ." (2 Timothy 2:10)

It was the kind of moment that people have nightmares about. A tanker truck filled with 2,500 gallons of propane gas caught fire while parked at a fuel storage warehouse. The flames shot 30 to 40 feet out of the back of the truck and quickly spread to a loading dock. Several large tanks nearby were in danger of exploding.

At that point, the plant manager, after helping to rescue the badly burned driver, jumped into the cab and drove the blazing truck away from the warehouse. His quick action and courage saved lives.

The apostle Paul also risked his life on behalf of others (2 Timothy 2:10). He was stoned and left for dead (Acts 14:19). On another occasion he was mobbed, whipped, and imprisoned
(16:22-23).
Three times he was shipwrecked, and he was beaten many times with lashes and rods
(2 Corinthians 11:23-28).
Why did Paul willingly endure such suffering? He was thinking in terms of eternal fire and eternal life, so he gladly undertook the risk.

Do we see the danger as clearly as Paul did?
Do we take advantage of opportunities to go to the rescue of people who need the good news of Christ?
Are we filled with the same sense of purpose that caused Paul to endure all things for the sake of the lost?

 위험을 감수하는 이유

“그러므로 내가 택하신 자를 위하여 모든 것을 참음은 저희로도 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 구원을 영원한 영광과 함께 얻게 하려 함이로다” (디모데후서 2:10)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
마치 악몽과 같은 순간이었습니다. 프로판 가스를 1만 리터나 적재한 트럭이 연료 저장소에 주차하고 있다가 불이 붙었던 것입니다. 불길은 트럭의 뒤쪽에서 10미터가 넘게 치솟으며 순식간에 충전소로 번져갔습니다. 그래서 근처에 있는 몇 개의 대형 가스 탱크들이 폭발의 위기에 놓이게 되었습니다.

그 때에 공장장은 중화상을 입은 운전사를 구출하고 나서 운전대로 뛰어올라 활활 타고 있는 트럭을 운전하여 저장소로부터 멀리 옮겨놓았습니다. 그의 신속한 행동과 용기가 많은 생명을 구했습니다.

바울사도도 다른 사람들을 위해 자기의 목숨을 내어놓았습니다 (딤후 2:10). 그는 돌에 맞아서 죽을 지경에까지 버려졌습니다 (행 14:19). 어떤 때는 폭도들에게 몰매를 맞기도 했으며, 채찍에 맞아 옥에 갇히기도 했습니다 (행 16:22-23). 세 번이나 배가 파선되는 위험에 빠졌고, 여러 번 채찍과 태장을 맞았습니다
(고후 11:23-28). 바울은 어째서 그런 고난을 감수했을까요?
그는 모든 일을 영원한 지옥 불과 영원한 생명의 관점에서 생각했기 때문에 위험들을 기꺼이 감수했던 것입니다.

우리도 바울처럼 그러한 위험들을 확실하게 보고 있습니까? 그리스도의 복음을 필요로 하는 사람들을 구할 수 있는 기회가 왔을 때 우리는 행동으로 옮기고 있습니까? 바울로 하여금 잃어버린 영혼을 위해 모든 것을 감수하게 하였던 그런 삶의 목적 의식이 우리에게도 충만 합니까?

우리가 다른 사람들에게 예수님을 전한다면 어떤 위험이 있습니까?
육체적 피해? 욕설? 따돌림? 조롱? 물질적 손해?
혹은 그 밖의 다른 것?
