 Are You Listening?

"Speak, for Your servant hears."
(1 Samuel 3:10)

One of the happiest memories of my childhood is that of my mother reading Bible stories to me at bedtime.
Many of them made a great impression on me, especially the incident in the life of Samuel described in 1 Samuel 3.
I can still hear my mother reciting the young boy's response to the call of God: "Speak, for Your servant hears" (v.10).

Like Samuel, we need to be willing to hear the voice of the Lord. We have this opportunity if in the midst of life's everyday activities we take time to prayerfully read and study the Bible.
You see, God's Spirit communicates to us through the Word.

Thomas a' Kempis (1379-1471) summed it up well when he wrote: "Blessed indeed are those ears which listen not for the voice sounding without, but for the truth teaching inwardly. Blessed are the eyes that are shut to outward things but intent on things inward. Blessed are they who are glad to have time to spare for God, and who shake off all worldly hindrances. Consider these things, O my soul, and hear what the Lord your God speaks."

How long has it been since you've asked the Lord to make your heart receptive to His Word? He wants to hear you say,
"Speak, Lord, I'm listening."

"말씀하옵소서 주의 종이 듣겠나이다"
(사무엘상 3:10)

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
내 어린 시절의 가장 행복했던 기억 중의 하나는 잠자기 전 어머니가 성경 이야기를 읽어주시던 것입니다. 많은 이야기들이 제게 깊은 인상을 남겨주었지만 특별히 사무엘상 3장에 나오는 사무엘의 이야기가 그랬습니다.
나는 아직도 “말씀하옵소서 주의 종이 듣겠나이다”(10절)라고 사무엘이 하나님께 대답하는 장면을 나의 어머니가 읽으시던 소리를 듣는 것 같습니다.

사무엘처럼 우리도 기꺼이 주님의 음성을 들으려는 마음이 있어야 합니다. 우리가 매일의 일과 중에서 시간을 내어 기도하는 마음으로 말씀을 읽고 묵상한다면 이런 주님의 음성을 듣는 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 아시다시피 하나님의 영은 말씀을 통해 우리와 대화하십니다.

토마스 아 켐피스(1379-1471)는 이 점을 잘 요약하여 이렇게 기록하였습니다. “빈소리를 듣지 않고 내면세계를 향해 가르치는 진리의 소리에 기울이는 귀는 참으로 복이 있습니다. 세상의 것들에 대하여 눈을 감고 내면세계를 향해 전념하는 눈은 복이 있습니다. 세상의 장애물들을 떨쳐 버리며 기쁘게 하나님을 위하여 시간을 내는 자는 복이 있습니다. 내 영혼이여, 이것들을 생각하며 주 너의 하나님께서 하시는 말씀을 들으라.”

주님의 말씀을 잘 받아들이는 마음 밭을 만들어 달라고 주님께 간구 해본지가 얼마나 되었습니까? 주님은 “주여, 말씀하옵소서, 내가 듣겠나이다”라는 당신이 하는 말을 듣기 원하십니다.

내가 더 이상 약하거나 어린아이 같지 아니하나이다
당신의 영의 음성을 들을 때
내게서 예수님 닮은 사랑과 은혜가 비취게 하소서
