"O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."
(Matthew 26:42)

Have you or a friend been afflicted with an illness for which there is no medical cure? Has God denied your repeated requests for healing?
Has His refusal to say yes caused you to question His purpose?

An article by Carol Bradley tells us about the wisdom of Craig Satterlee, a seminary professor in Chicago. He has been legally blind since birth, with only 20 percent of normal vision. Does he complain, saying that God has not kept His promise to answer prayer? By no means! He believes wholeheartedly that God has given him something even better.


"I am whole," he testifies, "even though I am legally blind." If introduced as a believer in the power of prayer, he graciously explains,
"I don't believe in the power of prayer. I believe in the power and presence of God, so I pray." He adds, "We know that God brings light out of darkness, life out of death, hope out of despair. That's what Scripture teaches us."

Prayer isn't the way to get God to do whatever we want. It's an expression of our trust in His power, wisdom, and grace. No matter what we ask God to do for us, we are to have the attitude of Jesus, who said, "Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will" (Matthew 26:39).

 응답받지 못하는 기도

"내 아버지여 만일 내가 마시지 않고는 이 잔이 내게서 지나갈 수 없거든 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다"

● 말씀을 생각하며 ●
당신이나 당신의 어떤 친구가 불치의 병으로 고통 당한 적이 있습니까?
그런데 하나님께서 당신의 거듭되는 치유 요청을 거부하셨습니까?
그런 하나님의 거부가 당신으로 하여금 하나님의 목적에 대해 질문하게 만들었습니까?

캐롤 브래들리가 쓴 기사는 우리에게 시카고의 한 신학교 교수인 크레이그 새터리의 지혜에 대해 말해 줍니다. 그는 보통 시력의 20퍼센트만을 갖고 태어난 시각장애자였습니다. 그가 하나님께서 기도에 응답하겠다고 하신 약속을 지키지 않았다고 말하며 불평하였을까요?
전혀 아닙니다! 그는 하나님께서 오히려 더 좋은 것을 주셨다는 것을 진심으로 믿었습니다.

그는 “비록 시각장애자이지만 나는 온전합니다”라고 간증합니다. 그는 또 기도의 능력을 믿는 이로 소개되면 “나는 기도의 능력을 믿는 것이 아닙니다. 나는 하나님의 능력과 존재하심을 믿는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 기도하는 것입니다” 라고 은혜스럽게 설명합니다.
그리고 “우리는 하나님께서 어둠으로부터 빛을, 사망으로부터 생명을, 절망으로부터 희망을 이끌어 내신다는 것을 압니다. 그것이 바로 성경이 우리에게 주는 교훈입니다” 라고 그는 말합니다.

기도는 우리가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 하나님께서 하시도록 만드는 방법이 아닙니다. 기도는 하나님의 능력, 지혜 그리고 은혜에대한 우리의 신뢰를 표현하는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님께 무엇을 간구하든지, “그러나 나의 원대로 마옵시고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서” (마 26:39)라고 하신 예수님의 자세로 임해야 할 것입니다.

어떤 멋진 방법인지는 몰라도
하나님이 기도에 응답하신다는 것을 압니다.
내 기도를 하나님께 맡깁니다.
나보다 더 현명한 의지를 가진 그분께.
